Architecture Explained: The Phases of Designing & Building a Project WC STUDIO architects

“We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista. Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla.

It’s important to note that the builder will sign a contract with the client, not the architect. But the architect is still involved, assisting the client with the bidding process. They will review bid submittals and help select the best fit for the project.

Why Include a Programming Design Process?

Their primary work in this phase would include being at the site visits, taking photos, and writing field reports. Every design project begins with site analysis …start it with confidence for free!. – learn from and use a standard library of parts to correctly create and formulate construction drawings that work.

After a floor plan has been decided on, then we move into the second phase of the architecture design process, design development. In this stage, we refine the initial plans to include more of the necessary details needed to develop and carry through the build. This is also when we start designing exterior elevations and render 3D models of your home for you to review.

Architecture Design Process: The 7 phases

By breaking projects into phases, everyone can operate in lockstep and know what to expect and when to expect it. Detailed drawings, all significant equipment specifications, type of materials or finish for every surface of the project. Meanwhile, architecture students follow a similar process to define the problem, come up with ideas, present to others, and make revisions.

They want to make sure they get it right and they usually are ruled by their budget. Of course, these percentages can vary depending on client requests, size of the project, number of revisions needed, specific deliverables, etc. They need to be submitted in a timely manner since you’ll have to wait for approval. Clients will need to provide written approval of the schematic design before progressing to the next phase. For consistency and clarity across all projects, the phases have been defined by the AIA.

UCLA also offers the Summer Scholars Support program, a need- and merit-based scholarship opportunity for California high school students enrolled in grades 8th – 11th. This year’s program will be delivered both in-person and online in a remote learning format, with program dates July 1 through July 19, 2024. For those who elect to complete TeenArch in person, housing check-in takes place on June 30, and check out on July 20. For Summer 2024, JumpStart will be offered in person, and TeenArch will be offered in both in-person and remote formats, with specific details below.

What Is the Architectural Design Process?

The primary goal of this phase is to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the constraints of the project and to construct a plan for the project’s execution. This comprehensive document will give the owner procedures to run and maintain the different systems and equipment in the facility. It will provide the owner with all of the essential details of everything on the property and how to ensure that it runs smoothly. During preconstruction, the architect arranges and leads the meetings, as well as the progress meetings during construction. The architect also reviews testing, such as soil or concrete, to ensure nothing will interfere with the plans.

Architectural Design Process: A Quick Guide

Learning the lingo and purpose behind each phase will give you a better understanding of what an architect does, what deliverables to expect, and how the client fits into each step. At this stage of architectural design, we analyze the client’s program and begin preliminary studies to develop design concepts and sketches. These sketches show space arrangements, planning relationships, and a variety of materials. As the floor plans and shapes are defined, the details of materials and construction take longer to complete. We pay attention to how our clients react and make any necessary adjustments in response to their feedback.

Send the project documents, including the drawing set, to the contractors who are prepared to take on your project – usually this is done by uploading them to a file sharing site. First, you will have to create a list of contractors you want to invite to the table. Use Google to find contractors in the project area – travel costs can add up quickly.

This should include drawings, the depths of the foundations, project manuals, any Change Orders and contract modifications, and Addenda. Once those punch list items have been completed, it’s time for the Certificate of Substantial Completion. In order to cut down on the clutter on the drawings, you only need to include information necessary for each set. Information vital to the contractor, like the details of a decorative design element, won’t matter to the permitting authority. Including all the information on both sets will clutter the drawings and confuse the contractor or permitting authority. The architect plays a central role in this coordination as they often have the best overall understanding of the design intent and a basic working knowledge of how the various components of the building need to fit together.

They will use their origami models and architectural drawings to inform their design, taking into consideration feedback they have received over the course of the studio. JumpStart is a 3.5-week summer studio for individuals contemplating careers in architecture, design, and related fields. The program is open to students from all backgrounds and carries six quarters of University of California credit. To participate in JumpStart, students must hold a high school diploma (or equivalent). Both programs culminate in final presentations of work to guest critics, offering students a chance to apply their skills and gain experience and poise with giving professional presentations. Students leave the programs with new design languages and insights, as well as a design portfolio they can use to apply to future design programs.

With three recipients, AUD notched more graduate-architecture honorees than any other school for the second year in a row; last year's AUD honorees were Sijie Ji, Wanying Li, and Clytie Hoi Ting Mak (all MArch '23). Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space. An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances.

We were fortunate in that, in school, we were the last generation to learn to draw by hand, yet in our early careers we were heavily influenced and somewhat entranced with the advent and wonders of the computer age. Two highly talented and technically savvy individuals can produce more than a firm of ten could a few short years ago, and this also gives our clients direct and continuous contact with the design leadership. Our early training was in traditional architecture and design, and with the growing appreciation for historic preservation began our practice committed to these classic principles. We were taught to see architecture not as an appliqué of fashionable elements, but rather a disciplined study of stylistic problem-solving tenets that, if diligently practiced, usually begat beautifully crafted designs. Regardless of project size, we seek clients who appreciate the notion of quality, and value the efforts necessary to achieve it.
